Home

“We carry our home with us wherever we go.”

From the Sandhills to the streets of Omaha, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln impacts the lives of all Nebraskans.

Whether it’s launching small businesses or launching robots into space, the iconic red ’N’ plays a role in the loftiest goals, hardest-won victories and everyday moments of happiness across our state.

Soundtracked by the timeless words of Johnny Carson, UNL’s “Home Again” reminds us that the University of Nebraska–Lincoln has been — and always will be — a driving source of community, pride and inspiration for anyone who calls themselves a Husker.

And, to borrow a phrase from Carson, if you’ve ever called this place home, you’ll carry Nebraska with you wherever you go.

Johnny Carson

The Voice Behind “Home Again”

A 1949 graduate of UNL, Johnny Carson was an icon of American television best known for his thirty-year tenure as host of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. His warm, witty and unmistakably Midwestern charm helped him grow from an affable television host into an entertainment pioneer that brought both grounded conversation and uproarious laughter into American TV sets each night.

Carson was the recipient of numerous Emmy awards, a Kennedy Center Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

A lifelong Husker who never forgot his Nebraska roots, Johnny Carson’s 1982 NBC special “Johnny Goes Home” finds him reminiscing on his Nebraska upbringing. His thoughtful musings on what makes Nebraska special provide a fitting backdrop for “Home Again.”

Over the years, Johnny himself and the Carson Foundation have donated over $38 million to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Johnny Carson School of Theater and Film and the cutting-edge Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts honor his legacy and staggering contributions to the past, present and future success of our university.
